In the Canary Islands, non-fiction cinema is not an isolated phenomenon: it carries with it a proven maturity, mastery and prestige that reaches beyond our archipelago’s borders. The D.O. Canaria section, a collective act of resistance, has established itself over the past 20 years and celebrates this landmark moment in our non-fiction cinema, bringing together the perspectives of the Canarian filmmaking community. Supporting our filmmakers safeguards our ability to tell our own story, making DOCanarias a safe harbour for formally rigorous and bold non-fiction cinema that makes its mark at international festivals and claims its place on the world stage.

In partnership with the Coordinadora de Festivales de Cine de las Islas Canarias, this space is not only a showcase, but also a meeting point for exchange, dialogue and creative resistance. Through these films, our creators exercise their fundamental right to rewrite the narratives of their own territory. These are stories rooted in their place of origin. Arising from this local context, they enter into dialogue with the international scene and remind us that what is considered a geographical periphery is actually a universal creative centre, an essential window through which to discover narrative riches, rootedness and the critical perspective of Canarian filmmakers.
